(Upcyclelino) Shibori-Dyed Linen Cotton Easy-fit Pants

These easy pants are made from a plain-woven fabric that combines linen No. 40 yarn for the warp and recycled cotton-linen yarn (single yarn, cotton count No. 15) for the weft. The fabric, which is a timeless staple suitable for all seasons, is enhanced with intricate shibori dyeing techniques. We have used a version of UpcycleLino fabric that provides just the right amount of opacity, ensuring that the pants are breathable without being too sheer—ideal for staying cool and relaxed even in the summer heat. The waist features a fully elasticated band for comfort, and both the design and pattern have been carefully adjusted to ensure that the dye pattern appears clearly and beautifully when the shibori process is applied. The dyeing technique used is Arimatsu shibori, a traditional Japanese resist dyeing method with deep roots in Nagoya, recognized as one of Japan’s three major shibori styles. Traditionally, Arimatsu shibori is used for items like tenugui, kimono, and yukata, where the fabric is dyed in flat sheets. However, this method often leads to significant fabric waste and inefficiencies during the garment construction process. To address this, we have adopted a post-construction dyeing approach to recreate the shibori effect on finished products. By dyeing the completed garment, we’re able to achieve a natural continuity in the pattern across different parts of the piece, such as the front and back of the legs. As each item is hand-dyed, no two are exactly alike—each pair is a unique, one-of-a-kind piece.
